Having been rejected by Barcelona’s Frankie De Jong in the Summer transfer window, the Red Devils retain interest in the player. Acquiring the player seems to be crucial in Erik Ten Haag’s plans for the club. Consequently, the team is not giving up pursuit of the 25-year old midfielder just yet.
Manchester United had a principle agreement in place with the Spanish giant, Barcelona. However, De Jong being unkeen about the move, prompted the Spanish outfit to pull out. The transfer fell through and the player stayed with the catalan club.
De Jong is a midfielder not known for his goals but his ability to dictate the game’s tempo. He was crucial in Ajax’s 2018/19 Champions League fairytale campaign which saw the club reach the semi-finals. It knocked out Real Madrid and Juventus. However, a sensational hattrick from Tottenham’s Lucas Moura knocked out the Sons of the Gods.
The 25-year old is a regular starter in the Netherlands national team. Having been at Ajax with the current Manchester United coach, it’s no wonder why Ten Haag would want to reunite with him. The lack of Champions League football at Man-U might have played a huge part in De Jong’s decision to stay at Barca.
Should United finish in the top four at the end of this season’s Premier League, it would be a hard team to say no to, once again, for the Dutch midfielder.
