Football and Barcelona legend, Lionel Messi, will be out of contract by May 2023. Barcelona’s economic Vice President, Edward Romeu, has said there is a possibility for the Argentinian to return to the Camp Nou.
The 35-year old’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires at the end of the season and will reportedly decide his future after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar — which may well be his last.
While a transfer fee will not be required if his deal with PSG finally expires, significant funds will be required for his wages. Meanwhile, Romeu has made it clear that Barca can afford him after a significant improvement in the club’s financial situation.
Should Messi become available on a free transfer, a plethora of clubs would definitely be interested in the services of the Argentine.
Lionel Messi had to leave Barcelona in August 2021 on a free transfer to PSG due to the club’s poor finances.
Messi spent 17 seasons at the catalan club and scored a record 672 goals in 778 appearances for the senior side.
“There is a salary margin, we made an effort this summer and if any signing is needed [in January], we’ll analyze”, Romeu has said.
After investing heavily in the squad in the Summer transfer window, Romeu added that further additions could be made in January.
