Previewing our 2022-23 EPL predictions
The 2022-23 Premier League season starts on 5 August 2022. Manchester City were crowned champions for the second time in a row after finishing the 2021-22 season with 93 points. The competition is contested among 20 teams. The one with the most points at the end of the season is crowned.
EPL teams that finish in the top 4 automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League, while the team that ends in the fifth position qualifies for the UEFA Europa League. If the FA Cup winner is among the top 5 teams of the league, the sixth-placed team also qualifies for the Europa League, while the seventh-placed club qualifies for the newly formed UEFA Conference League. The bottom three will be relegated to the Championship, while the top three in the Championship will be promoted for the 2023-24 EPL season.
The 2022-23 England’s Premier League is already looking to be the best and most exciting in years. The Premier League’s big six teams were busy during the transfer window signing world-class players to improve the squad and provide good depth for the upcoming season.
Complete list of teams participating in the 2022-23 English Premier League:

EPL predictions this week will cover matches of all these teams!
Manchester City won the 2021-22 Premier League after finishing with 93 points, which was 1 point above second-placed Liverpool. The Citizens have won four of the last six Premier League titles, with two in a row. With the signing of Erling Haaland, Manchester City now have lots of options in the attacking phase while still defensively very strong, as they conceded the joint-least number of goals in the Premier League last season.
Kevin De Bruyne is still essential for the Citizens. After another good season, the Belgian international won his second PFA Players’ Player of the Year award in 2021.
Other key players of Manchester City apart from Haaland and De Bruyne:
- Jack Grealish
- Ruben Dias
- Riyad Mahrez
- Phil Foden
Chelsea won the 2020-21 Champions League since Thomas Tuchel took over in January. The Blues were 10th in the Premier League table when he took over and finished fourth while also reaching the FA Cup final. They also won the 2021 UEFA Super Cup on penalties, making it two European trophies in seven months for the German manager.
Tuchel quickly changed the team’s formation to 3-4-3 with two central midfielders and two fullbacks high up the pitch. With a back five without the ball under Tuchel, Chelsea in the 2020-21 season was able to keep the most clean sheets (11) while conceding the fewest goals (13), conceding the fewest big chances (14) and the least shots in the box (74) in the Premier League.
N’Golo Kante is still essential to Chelsea: he covers everywhere on the pitch, and there is even a saying that “70% of the world is covered by water, the rest by Kante”. The French midfielder is an energetic player who can win the ball back and progress the play. Kante’s performances in the Champions League earned him four man of the match awards.
Other key players of Chelsea apart from Kante:
- Mason Mount
- Kai Havertz
Manchester United finished second in the table in the 2021-22 EPL with 74 points. However, the Red Devils have been trophyless in the last five seasons.
Cristiano Ronaldo is back to United after 12 years. Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 games before switching to Real Madrid in 2009. The Red Devils announced they’d agreed on a deal to bring him back with the fee rumoured to be about €15m initially, plus €8m in bonuses. Man Utd were swift to respond in the transfer market after they lost the Europa League final to Villarreal on penalties.
If he stays, Cristiano Ronaldo will be critical to United’s success in the 2022-23 Premier League. He is the highest goalscorer in soccer history. Ronaldo won his first Ballon d’Or in 2008 while playing for United. After joining Real Madrid in 2009, he won four Champions League titles and four more Ballon d’Or awards before joining Juventus in 2018. With Juve, Ronaldo won the 2018-19 and 2019-20 Serie A while finishing as the highest goalscorer in 2020-21 with 29 goals.
Bruno Fernandes produced world-class numbers in the 2020-21 Premier League season with 30 goals contributions. Bruno finished with the third most goals in the 2020-21 Premier League season (18) while overperforming his expected goals of 16.1. This Manchester United midfielder also provided the second most assists in the Premier League that season (12) while creating the most big chances in the league (20).
The Red Devils signed Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund for a deal worth £73m. The 19-year-old joined after an impressive spell with Dortmund, where he was one of the two players to score 30+ goals and complete 30+ assists in Europe since the 2018-19 season. Manchester United also signed Raphael Varane from Real Madrid. Varane is a four-time Champions League winner with Madrid.
Other key players of Manchester United apart from Ronaldo and Fernandes:
- Mason Greenwood
- Marcus Rashford
- Harry Maguire
Liverpool was one point short of equalling Manchester City in the 2021-22 Premier League season, finishing second. They also lost the 2022 UCL final to Real Madrid 0-1 in a dramatic match.
The key player for Liverpool is Mohamed Salah, the record-holder for the most goals in a single Premier League Season (32), who finished the 2020-21 season with the second-most goals in the league (22). Salah will be looking to continue that form to keep the Reds going.
Virgil Van Dijk is also ready to star, which means the Red’s defence will be good. However, they will most likely concede a few goals as they did last season.
Other key players of Liverpool apart from Salah and Van Dijk:
- Sadio Mane
- Jordan Henderson
- Trent Alexander-Arnold
- Andrew Robertson
With Harry Kane staying, Tottenham will be a real force in the 2022-23 Premier League. Tottenham finished fourth in the table last season and qualified for the UEFA Champions League.
Harry Kane will undoubtedly be essential for Tottenham in yet another season. Kane won the 2020-21 EPL Golden Boot award scoring 23 goals while providing the most assists (14). The England captain is one of the best Premier League players with exceptional goal-scoring ability. Kane and Son have created a formidable duo finishing with the best Premier League combination between two players in English Premier League history.
Other key players of Tottenham apart from Kane and Son:
Arsenal improved season-to-season, finishing fifth in the 2021-22 EPL season and qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.
Gabriel Jesus joined the Gunners from Manchester City during the 2022 summer transfer. The Brazilian forward will be essential to Arsenal in attack, being the second most valued player on the team and the best striker. He ranks fourth by chance to take the Premier League’s 2022-23 Golden Boot.
Other key players of Arsenal apart from Jesus:
- Bukayo Saka
- Martin Odegaard
