The Bavarians welcomed 6th placed Mainz to the Allianz Arena for the round 12 fixture of the 2022/23 Bundesliga campaign. The fixture took place on 29 October 2022, at 2:30 p.m.
The first half brought four goals, and ended 3-1 in favour of Bayern. The second half was similar, and saw four goals scored again, to end the game 6-2, in favour of the home side.
Serge Gnabry opened a flurry of goals on the five minute mark. After a super team move, Sadio Mane drilled a low cross into the Mainz danger area. Musiala dummied and then, Gnabry controlled and directed the ball into the bottom right corner.
Another brilliant team move saw Bayern double its advantage. Mane left the ball for Musiala, who played a smart one-two with Choupo-Moting, then fired a low shot to the left corner, at just 28 minutes of the clock.
Five minutes from halftime, Mane was brought down in the box. At first the referee ignored the foul, but he concurred, after consulting the VAR. Mane stepped up and missed, but tucked in the rebound for Bayern’s third.
On the other end, Mainz got its own penalty after Alphonso Davies wrongly used his elbow in the box. Similar to Mane’s, Burkadt also stepped up and missed, but there was no rebound for redemption. The resulting corner, however, was headed in by Widmer to make it 3-1 at halftime.
In the 58th minute, Goretzka leaped over a Mainz defender to head in Mane’s cross, hitting off Bayern’s fourth. The home side created more chances but lacked the finishing touch to put it away. On the 78th-minute mark, substitute Mathys Tel had his shot from the edge of the area deflected into the Mainz net to make it 5-1 for the hosts — a guaranteed Bayern victory.
Three minutes later, Bayern goalkeeper, Ulreich, gave the ball away cheaply to a Mainz forward. The attacker drove into the box and back-heeled a pass to find Marcus Ingvartsen, whose ground ball deflected into the Bayern net.
The hosts refused to relent and created another sleek team move for Choupo-Moting to score Bayern’s sixth, and end the match 6-2 for the Bavarians.
The win saw Bayern usurp Union Berlin as table toppers with 25 points and a +28 goal difference after 12 games. Mainz fell to eighth, with 18 points and a -1 goal difference.
