Brighton was home to Chelsea for the 14th round of the English Premier League. The match was held on Saturday, 29 October 2022.
Chelsea was handed its first ever defeat to the Seagulls in what was a shambolic performance by the Blues. Two own goals from the Blues and an additional from Trossard saw the first half finish 3-0 in favour of the hosts. The match ended in a 4-1 victory for the Seagulls.
Trossard was quick to open the scoring in the fifth minute. Thiago Silva gave the ball away to Mitoma in the attacking third. He dribbled his way in and passed to Leandro Trossard in the box. Trossard rounded the keeper and slotted the ball in.
Brighton had Loftus-Cheek to thank for the team’s second goal. March swung in a corner in the 14th minute, Loftus-Cheek tried to clear it but the ball hit the crossbar and went into the net.
Another defensive error saw The Seagulls pick up their third goal. Estupinan drove into the box and tried to pick up a teammate in the six-yard box with a low cross. Chalobah slid in with intentions of clearing his line but could only divert the ball into his own net.
Chelsea seemed to come back stronger in the second half. Kai Havertz pulled a goal back for the Blues just three minutes into the half. Gallagher sent in a good cross that Havertz powered straight at Sanchez and into the back of the net.
Pascal Gross drove the nail into the coffin two minutes into added time. Mendy did well to make two saves to deny Enciso from scoring but could not stop Gross, as he pounced on the second rebound.
Brighton’s win took them to seventh place with 18 points from 12 matches so far. Chelsea, however, dropped to fifth place with 21 points from 12 games. The team will drop further if Manchester United wins its game on Sunday, 30 October 2022.
