EPL 2022-23 round 14: Liverpool records first home defeat by Leeds in 30 games

Liverpool hosted Leeds United at Anfield Stadium for the 14th round of the Premier League 2022/23 Campaign. The match was held on Saturday, 29 October 2022.

Summerville scored a last minute goal to hand Liverpool its first defeat at Anfield in over 30 games in all competitions. The first half ended in a 1-1 draw, and finished 1-2 in favour of the visitors.

The Reds seemed to start off on the strong foot with Struijk having to hook the ball off the line in the very first minute. A huge mix-up between Cooper and Meslier saw the ball fall to Salah who steered an effort at a well empty net but Struijk bursted in to clear the ball away.

The visitors scored the first goal of the game in the fourth minute. Rodrigo was afforded an easy finish after Gomez played a loose pass, back to Allison. The keeper slipped and Rodrigo easily pounced on the ball and scored into an empty net.

The Reds responded ten minutes later. Robertson crossed a ball into the penalty area that just missed Fabinho, but Salah was there to finish it up.

Leeds tried to regain its lead in the 21st minute. Kristensen lifted a brilliant cross towards the middle that Aaronson guided towards goal but saw his effort clatter off the woodwork.

The second half saw chances from both teams at different times and especially for Liverpool. However, Meslier did incredibly well and was able to pull up to nine saves!

The breakthrough didn’t come until the 89th minute. Gnonto did well on the left flank to get away from his markers and work a low cross into the box that Bamford steered into the path of Summerville. The winger took his strike early and was able to beat Allison at the far post, finding the back of the net.

Liverpool’s loss saw the team drop to ninth position with 16 points from 12 games. Leeds moved all the way up to 15th with 12 points from 12 games.
